State of Origin series
State of Origin is the annual best-of-three series of rugby league
football matches between the Maroons and the Blues, who represent the
Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales
respectively.Described as “sport’s greatest rivalry,”the State of Origin
series is one of Australia’s and the region’s premier sporting events,
attracting a huge television audience and usually selling out the
stadiums in which the games are played.[4] Despite the existence of
international tournaments and State of Origin being a domestic
competition, it is frequently cited as being the highest-level of rugby
league played anywhere in the world.
Teams
Since 1908 Australia’s two major rugby league-playing states, Queensland
and New South Wales, have played representative matches against each
other and this has continued into the “state of origin” era which began
with the 1980s. The two states’ teams are frequently referred to as the
Maroons and Blues, reflecting the respective colours of their jerseys.
The Maroons team is administered by the Queensland Rugby League and the
Blues, by the New South Wales Rugby League.Rugby league’s biggest game
of the year will explode onto Suncorp a week tonight with Origin 3 in
front of a capacity 52,500 at the cauldron.Far bigger than the NRL grand
final, or any Test match.A blockbuster. This rugby league decider has
everything, with NSW coach Ricky Stuart desperate to end Queensland’s
six-year dominance at the top of the list. But Suncorp isn’t a happy
hunting ground for the men-in-blue. Since the turn of the century,
Queensland has won 10-5. During the record six-year dominance,Queensland
has won 6-2 at Suncorp.Comprehensive.The tension has been increased by
two key players – Queensland’s mercurial full-back Billy Slater, and
teak-tough NSW forward Glenn Stewart – suffering from knee injuries,
with both extremely doubtful starters. Both have been included in a
record 19-man squad for NSW and 20 for Queensland, more in hope than
reality, that must be trimmed to 17 by game time. That in itself will
give Stuart and counterpart Mal Meninga many a sleepless night.Replacing
Slater is the more intriguing problem of the two.Meninga has two
alternatives in crack centre Greg Inglis, who is going gangbusters at
fullback with Souths, with the Storm’s Dane Nielsen set to take over
Inglis’ centre spot.Or the Cowboys’ electric Matt Bowen, who hasn’t
played Origin since 2007.Having said that, there’s no more electric
footballer going around than gifted Bulldog fullback Ben Barba, but he’s
not in the squad. The way he engineered the length of the field classic
try of the season on the way to the Bulldogs upsetting Melbourne was
breathtaking. From the NSW point of view, Dragon Beau Scott will replace
Glenn Stewart if necessary. But both Stuart and Meninga are a master
class when it comes to clouding issues.
Often considered the pinnacle of Australian rugby league, State Of
Origin is one of Australia’s premier sporting events, often played in
front of sold-out stadiums. The series itself is contested between New
South Wales and Queensland, who have formed an epic rivalry that has
seen the series produce the toughest and most skilful Rugby League in
the world. Since its inception in 1980, the results between NSW and QLD
have been extraordinarily even, adding further emphasis to the
competition’s success. Overall the Maroons have won 16 series compared
to the Blues 12. In games won, the Maroons hold a seven-game advantage
over the Blues with 49 wins compared to 42 for NSW.In the 2011 State of
Origin series NSW and Queensland headed to Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane
with the series locked at 1-1. Queensland won the decider 34-24 to claim
a record sixth consecutive State of Origin series victory, having held
the series since 2006.The 2013 State of Origin series will be split
between three cities, with Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium hosting game one,
before the series moved to Sydney’s ANZ Stadium in game two, and Suncorp
Stadium in Brisbane for game three. Led by Ricky Stuart, NSW will face a
mammoth task to overturn QLD’s dominance in 2013, although Mal
Meninga’s Queensland team will face a challenge without captain and
play maker Darren Lockyer, who retired at the end of the 2011 season.
